Craig Bunch hit a seond half hat trick as Peacehaven produced a
spectacular victory in the FA Vase. The odds appeared to be
against Pete Edwards side as they faced last seasons beaten semi
finalists on their own patch, but they produced probably their
best performance of the season to reach the third round.
The match was in doubt right up to kick off, as dreadful weather
left Mill Meadow sodden. To the relief of a substantial
travelling contingent from Peacehaven the match went ahead, and
their side didn't take long to seize the initiative.
Wes Millis was left unmarked from a corner, and headed
powerfully past Mark Oliver, just thiteen minutes in.
The lead lasted less than ten minutes, as Alan Headley seized
upon hesitation in midfield to draw the hosts level.
Peacehaven had posed a threat throughout the first half, but as
so often this season they stepped up a gear after half time.
They regained the lead when Clive Snell played an inch perfect
pass to Callum Saunders who crossed for Bunch to slide home.
Bunch's second was far more spectacular, volleying past Oliver
from outside the box after the keeper had misjudged a clearance,
and he completed his hat trick when he got on the end of Andy
Wilkinson's cross. It was fitting reward for a player who has
had to shoulder a lot of Peacehaven's attacking responsibility
in recent weeks.
Wilkinson was then brought down for a penalty which Saunders
converted with customary efficency to wrap up the scoring, and
Peacehaven had secured a place in the next round.
