Two goals in the last five minutes settled this
strange match. Despite being outplayed for virtually
the whole game Peacehaven thought they had forced a
replay thanks to Clive Snell's late penalty. They
were still celebrating as Ashford went straight to
the other end of the pitch and smashed in the
winning goal.
The manner of the defeat was
infuriating, but in truth Peacehaven could have few
complaints about the result, as but for some
excellent goalkeeping from Josh Heyburn, and some
wasteful finishing from Ashford the match would have
been settled far earlier.
Lee Newman and Ashley Rees started in
place of Rob O'Toole and Tom Levitt against a side
whose attack was spearheaded by ex Brighton pro Kane
Louis. They dominated the first half as Peacehaven
struggled to cope with the power and aggression of
their approach. Had it not been for an series of
excellent saves from Heyburn they would have been
ahead, as he kept out efforts from Jamie Lawrence,
Jordan Kiffin and Louis. Against the run of play it
was Peacehaven who went closest to opening the
scoring though, as Rees low shot came back off the
post.
The second half continued the pattern
of the first, and it was little surprise when
Lawrence played in Jones Awuah for the opening goal
after 61 minutes. Despite two changes of formation
and the introduction of Craig Bunch and Aaron
MacMillan there was little sign of a comeback from
Peacehaven. The match looked to be slipping out of
reach when Adam Kneller conceded a penalty after
bringing down Lawrence, but Heyburn saved Kiffin's
spot kick.
With time running out Peacehaven had
an unlikely life line as Billy Jeffreys handled on
the line and the referee awarded the second penalty
of the afternoon. Snell's aim was rather better than
Kiffin's and somehow the match was level. The home
defence then completely switched off, allowing a big
punt forward to reach Mark Bitmead, who had a simple
finish to put his side through to the next round
against Worthing.
Manager Pete Edwards was less than
happy with the performance saying he was
disappointed with the way some people had applied
themselves. "Fitness played a big part in this
result - everyone has to accept that and deal with
it"
