Kick-off
had been put back as Hamble had been delayed, and
they took time to find their feet as Peacehaven
pushed them, looking for an early break-through.
They
were nearly successful in the 4th minute when Adam
Kneller rose to meet a corner, only to see his
header cleared off the line, and 3 minutes later
Ashley Rees beat the offside trap, rounded Jon Webb
in the Hamble goal, but seemed to lose his |

|
footing as he lined up his shot.
After surviving the early scares,
Hamble came more into the game as the half
progressed and the pace of Richard Gregory out on
the right wing started to cause the home defence
problems. A flurry of chances fell to the visitors,
with Jamie Musselwhite narrowly missing from close
range, and James Roden producing a top class save
from Joe Adams.
As the referee was considering how
much injury time to add, Peacehaven produced easily
the best chance of the first half. Rob O'Toole's
cross picked out Craig Hall in the middle of the 6
yard box, but his downward header somehow flew up
and over the bar.
Clive Snell, now fully fit after
his recent injury, nearly broke the deadlock early
in the second half with a rasping drive which Webb
did well to tip around the post, but it was soon to
be the Peacehaven keeper who was being tested.
Musselwhite skipped through the
home defence and Adams (producing undoubtedly his
best performance so far this season) saved well from
close range, The rebound was driven back in past
Adams, but new signing Ben Bowra managed to make a
goal-line clearance.
This was a game between two well
matched sides, and you began to sense that it would
take a mistake to separate them. With 12 minutes to
go, and extra-time looming, Ashley Rees ran on to a
through ball, cut into the box, turned his defender,
and was upended in the process. Rob O'Toole
(pictured)
stepped up for the resultant penalty and, despite Webb getting
a hand to the ball, his shot rifled into the bottom
corner.
Hamble pushed forward desperately
looking to level, but the home defence remained
solid and kept a first "clean-sheet" for 5 games.
"It was a tough game" said Pete
Edwards afterwards. "We'd done our homework and knew
what to expect. I was delighted with everyone's
attitude and commitment today, it was a good team
performance"
The draw for the 2nd Round will be
made on Monday morning in London.
