still on course for a charge in
the second half of the season.
The ease with which they saw off a
Pagham side who were rated as amongst the title
favourites at the start of the season will only add
credence to that ambition, and will have a few other
sides looking over their shoulders. This was a far
more comfortable victory than anyone would have
predicted, but from the moment Peacehaven took the
lead the result never really seemed to be in doubt.
Scott Marshall returned to the
starting line up, in an otherwise unchanged
Peacehaven side. Pagham had gone into the match in
good form, after impressive victories over Redhill
and Three Bridges, and their side was spearheaded by
the much feared Scott Murfin.
Peacehaven took the lead within
minutes of the kick off, as Ashely Rees and Ryan
Bradley combined to set up O'Toole for a simple
finish from the left of the six yard box. Bradley
then went close to adding a second, but was denied
by a fine save from Wes Hallet. O'Toole then spurned
a glorious chance to double his side's lead, being
twice denied by Hallet when it seemed easier to
score. He made amends shortly afterwards, powering
home a header from Clive Snell's corner.
Pagham were struggling to make any
impact on a well organised visiting defence. The
curious decision to play the diminutive Murfin as a
lone forward was not proving to be very effective,
and Peacehaven were rarely troubled in the first
half.
After the break Pagham began to
dominate, as Peacehaven started to sit back. They
had lots of the ball but rarely in areas where they
were likely to hurt Peacehaven, and you could sense
the frustration building around Nyetimber Lane.
It was also a testament to the
increasing resiliance of the Peacehaven defence. The
start of the campaign was scarred with a series of
calamitous defensive displays, but they have found a
way of closing the door of late, and that has spread
confidence throughout the team. Much of that is down
to the perfrormances of Adam Kneller, who has
established himself at the heart of the defence
after a difficult start, and who was in imperious
form on Saturday.
The game was over as a contest 8
minutes from time when O'Toole completed his hat
trick from the penalty spot, after Ashely Rees had
been tripped.
