Wick arrived in confident mood
after six successive wins, and immediately set about
a fragile home defence. Brett Forden and George
Gaskin's physical power was causing consternation at
the back for Peacehaven, and it was no surprise when
they took an early lead. Kieron Urquart stole
possession high up the pitch and a quick counter
attack released Gaskin, and he slammed a low shot
past Joe Adams.
Peacehaven responded well and were
level within minutes. Rob O'Toole played in Scott
Marshall and the midfielder slid a well placed shot
into the bottom corner.
Wick were soon back on the attack
and back in front. Gaskin found himself in the clear
again, and though Adams saved his first shot no one
responded quickly enough to stop him grabbing his
second goal of the night.
Wick were now rampant, and another
quick counter attack saw them move two goals clear.
Again Peacehaven lost possession high up the pitch,
and with no midfield cover Gaskin fed Seb Baggura,
who drilled in his sides third of the night.
Peacehaven were reeling, and it
took them a while to regain any composure. As half
time approached they finally began to put some
pressure on the visitors, and snatched a lifeline
when O'Toole poked home Freddie Barker's deflected
shot.
That should have set them up for a
second half onslaught, but it never materialised.
Wick, who have been hugely boosted by the arrival of
ex-Pagham boss Dave Berkowitz in their dugout, were
well organised at the back, and never allowed
Peacehaven to build any momentum. A succession of
long balls were easily dealt with by the Wick
defence, and Peacehaven were never able to sustain
any pressure.
Wick probably should have added to
their lead, when Gaskin hooked over after Adams had
dropped the ball at his feet. Peacehaven were
throwing everything they could at them, but by the
final whistle the visiting keeper Maciej Kason
hadn't had to make a save in the second half, and
that told its own story.
