  PEACEHAVEN & T. U18's  4  PHOENIX SPORTS U18's  1

It was a bitterly cold evening at Piddinghoe Avenue as the Under 18's entertained Phoenix Sports in the John Ullmann Cup - a competition run by the Kent Youth League.

Jimmy Thomson returned to the Peacehaven team from suspension, and he was joined by Adam Harris, Frazer Massen and Steven Whelan with Connor Saunders, Dean Smith, Charlie Miles and Freddie Barker all named as subsititutes for this game.

Peacehaven took the lead early with their first corner. Tom Tyler's delivery was met by Jimmy Thomson who's header flew in to open the scoring. They could have doubled the lead soon after when Matt Lago's long shot came back into play off the post.

Despite having a lot of possession, Peacehaven had to wait until 2 minutes from half time until they were able to add to their lead. A clever pass from Steffan Robinson-Webster on the edge of the box found Matt Lago who rifled into back of the net, despite a brave attempt to save from Phil Keehne in the visiting goal.

After the break, Phoenix played their best football of the game and almost managed to claw their way back into the match. With their first attack of the half Ryan Hassan pulled the ball back across the box for Charlie Mason to reduce the deficit, and 5 minutes later a great effort from Omar Elamantawy was well saved by Josh Heyburn.

Shortly after though, Peacehaven had restored their 2 goal lead and again it was from a corner. Steven Whelan's powerful header hit the post and rolled back across the line to end up in the opposite corner of the goal, and Phoenix now had a mountain to climb.

Substitute Dean Smith nearly put the game beyond any doubt on 70 minutes when he was played in by Harrison Cullaine but his shot agonisingly flew just wide, but with 5 minutes remaining it was Smith who was to complete the scoring - firing in at the back post from Robinson-Webster's low cross.

"I was a lot happier with the lads tonight" said Shaun Saunders after the game. "Their attitude was a lot better than at the weekend, and we were a lot quicker and sharper"

Peacehaven now go on to face either Cobham or Dulwich Hamlet (away) in the 2nd Round.
