The chronically bad weather
suffered in Sussex recently meant that this was the
first time either side had played in three weeks and
it was a relief to everyone to finally get back to
action.
It was a fifth meeting in the last two seasons for
these sides, with Peacehaven having won the previous
four, including a dramatic 4-3 win at the start of
the season.
The Beaconsfield has never been
known as a pitch for the purist, and the inclement
conditions meant that it was even more unpredictable
than usual. Hailsham had adopted a direct approach,
hoping to capitalise on the pace of Mark Goodwin.
They were the first side to create opportunites,
with Jamie Salvidge blasting over after a good
through ball from Luke Denton. Salvidge went close
again shortly afterwards, striking the bar with a
first time shot.
Against the run of play it was
Peacehaven who took the lead with half time
approaching. Rob O'Toole steered in, via a
deflection, from Clive Snell's corner. It was the
winger's fifth goal in five games. When Ryan Bradley
was brought down in the area shortly afterwards
Peacehaven had the chance to take a commanding lead,
but Snell's penalty was off target and Hailsham were
off the hook.
When O'Toole collected a straight
red card for a high challenge on Ashley Jarvis
minutes later it looked as though the match was
swinging decisively in their favour. Despite their
numerical advantage Hailsham were unable to build
any sustained pressure in the second half, and were
largely restricted to speculative efforts. They did
go close through a swerving shot from Tristan
Jarvis, but it was Peacehaven who grabbed the second
goal of the day.
Matt Hill played a superb ball
through to Bradley, who cut inside Steve Earley and
curled a superbly placed shot past Russell Tanner.
With time running out the Stringers were given a
lifeline in the shape of a highly dubious penalty,
given for shirt tugging. Joe Adams made an excellent
save to his left to deny Salvidge, and you sensed
that Hailsham's chance had gone.
They did pull a goal back through
a close range finish from Salvidge to ensure a nervy
finish, but Peacehaven hung on to extend their
unbeaten league run to eight matches..
