  MATCH FACTS BELOW

Peacehaven comfortably saw off Seaford to set up a tie against Horsham in the Brighton Charity Cup. Two goals in the first half decided a scrappy, untidy match.

The Brighton Charity Cup is rarely at the top of teams priorities at the start of the season, but tends to assume a significance once spring approaches, and other opportunities for silverware disappear. That was definitely the case for these sides, who would both have seen this as their last chance to claim a trophy.

Peacehaven’s side included a number of youngsters, but any suggestion that Pete Edwards wasn’t interested in the Competition would have been dispelled by a look at the bench, which incuded Ashley Rees, Ryan Bradley and Rob O’Toole.

Seaford have been hampered by a number of departures recently, in what has proved to be a rather disappointing season. One of those to have left is James MacKenzie, and he returned to haunt Tony Coade’s side.

Despite losing winger Darren Wall to an early injury Peacehaven had taken little time to establish their dominance in the match. They took the lead when MacKenzie won the ball near the half way line and released Craig Bunch, who was just being played onside by Leon Cumming. His return ball to MacKenzie presented the winger with a simple finish for his first goal for Peacehaven.

Seaford were having plenty of the ball, but they were lacking punch in attack, and caused little trouble to a visiting defence in which Adam Kneller was making his first return to the Crouch. Their best opportunity came when Simon Stevens put an unchallenged header over the bar, but they fell further behind when a clever chip from MacKenzie found Bunch at the far post, and he smashed home from a full one yard.

The second half became increasingly ragged, with Seaford attempting to force the breakthrough which would get them back in the match. As their frustration grew, some of the tackling became increasingly "X-Rated". Dave Bull, the referee, was certainly in a lenient mood, and players on both sides could count themselves lucky to escape censure for some their challenges.

In the end Seaford ran out of steam, and Peacehaven were able to progress to an intriguing looking 2nd Round tie with troubled Horsham.
