Peacehaven & Telscombe  2  Selsey  0

Sat 5th Mar, 2011.    Sussex County League, Division 1.

  MATCH FACTS BELOW

Peacehaven's first league match for three weeks produced a victory as comfortable as could be imagined. With Pagham crashing at Ringmer, and Three Bridges form having collapsed in the last month Peacehaven are still on course for a third place finish.

That would be no small achievement considering the disarray in which they started the season, and the progression from that point was exemplified by this match. After an erratic start to the season, they have become one of the hardest teams to beat in the league, and have restored Piddinghoe Avenue as a fortress.

Selsey have had an unremarkable campaign, and arrived with little left to play for. They were on the back foot from the start, and were very fortunate not to fall behind as Peacehaven created a succession of chances.

Aaron Gunn had a volley tipped wide, and Scott Marshall was blocked out after being played in by Ashley Rees. Rob O'Toole then broke clear but was unable to

find a convincing finish, and the frustration was starting to mount. That frustration was soon being vented at the officials, as what appeared to be a clear penalty, for a foul on Marshall was ignored.

Selsey at last started to offer something of a threat at the other end, and as the half drew to a close it appeared that Peacehaven might be made to pay for their wasteful finishing.

With time running out Ryan Bradley broke clear, and was clattered into by visiting keeper Simon Joyce. Rees was on hand to tap in the loose ball, and Royce could consider himself somewhat fortunate to escape further censure.

Adam Kneller took centre stage at the start of the second half, drilling in a powerful free kick which was palmed out by Joyce, and then appearing to be brought down as he broke into the penalty box shortly afterwards. The officials were again unmoved, but Peacehaven finally got their spot kick when Bradley was flattened by Scott Morley. O'Toole became the fourth Peacehaven player to miss from the spot in a week, but was on hand to tap in the rebound, and all but end the match as a contest.

The match drew to a sedate conclusion from that point, with Peacehaven unable to add to their advantage, and rarely threatened by the visitors.
