Wick  1  Peacehaven & Tels.  1

Sat 19th Mar, 2011.    Sussex County League, Division 1.

  MATCH FACTS BELOW

Were this match to be released on DVD it is unlikely that there would be many sales. This was an instantly forgettable encounter between two sides with little left to play for, and the spectacle reflected this fact. That both goals came from defensive mistakes typified the afternoon, and added to the sense of frustration with hung over the whole event.

One person who would definitely not be buying a copy is Peacehaven keeper Joe Adams, whose error handed Wick a share of the points. It would be unfair to blame him for the result however, as few of the other Peacehaven players distinguished themselves.

Peacehaven had been irritated by Crawley Down boss Darren Guirey's claim that they had raised their game for their encounter the previous week, but this performance, alongside the preceding defeat at Eastbourne United suggests that he may have a point. Peacehaven have only lost twice in nine matches against the top seven, but have only won five out of ten matches against sides in the

bottom six, and have gone out of two cups to Division 2 opposition - which suggests a certain lack of focus.

Pete Edwards and Terry Hall intend to reshape their team in the summer, and one of their main objectives will be to inject the sort of ruthlessness in this sort of encounter which seems set to win Guirey's side the title. Peacehaven were without Tom Levitt and Matt Hill, and went with all three of their main strikers, in what should have been a very attacking formation. Unfortunately they struggled to get any sort of service to them in a sluggish first half, and they were all too often left isolated.

Just as frustration was beginning to set in they took the lead. A big hoof forward by Adams wasn't dealt with by the Wick defence, and Ryan Bradley swivelled to hook in his tenth goal for Peacehaven.

Wick had terrorised Peacehaven in a cup match earlier in the season, but without the now departed George Gaskin they didn't have the same attacking threat, and struggled to create any opportunities. They wasted their best chance of the first half in injury time as Julian Boniface put an unchallenged header over the bar.

Peacehaven were looking very comfortable, but they never got going again after half time. They then managed to hand Wick an equaliser as Adams made a hash of a back-pass, allowing Michael Frangou to steel in and tap home.

The visitors then tried to summon up some momentum, but the pattern of the match was by now set, and the contest remained scrappy. A succession of running battles developed between players, which added little to the spectacle, and it was no surprise to see the scoreline stay level at the end.
