A workman-like effort saw the Under 18's pick up a hard earned 3 points in the spring sunshine at Middle Road this morning.

With Josh Heyburn suspended, the versatile Joe Panther happily pulled on the gloves for this game, whilst Jimmy Thomson and Frazer Massen returned after missing last weeks games at Hassocks. Tom Stutters and Matt Nuttman where both involved in the Brighton Marathon, and with 2 unexpected absentees, it meant Peacehaven where unable to give any rest to players who where involved in games yesterday.

Even so it was Peacehaven who went closest early on. A Tom Tyler corner was met by the head of Freddie Barker, but his effort crashed back off the foot of the post.

It was the home side though who were to take the lead midway throught the first half. After some uncertainty in the Peacehaven defence, a through ball was met

by Curt Foster who slotted the ball low past Panther to open the scoring.

A tactical change soon after saw Peacehaven creating more room for themselves, and they were rewarded on the stroke of half-time. A through ball from Matt Lago was ran onto by Freddie Barker, and he kept his nerve to fire home the equalizer.

There was still time for the home side to launch another attack before the break, and Joe Panther did well to block a close range shot from Foster to keep the scores level.

Peacehaven had chances early in the second half with Barker, Lago and Robinson-Webster all going close, whilst Shoreham, always dangerous on the break, nearly regained the lead midway through the half. Alex Fair picked the ball up outside the box and beat three defenders but, with the goal beckoning, fired over the bar.

From the resultant goal-kick, Peacehaven were to take the lead. A huge kick from Panther caused confusion in the Shoreham defence, and Freddie Barker pounced to put the ball past Mitchell in the home goal.

Given the heat, the work-rate from both sides was commendable, and Shoreham almost levelled with 10 minutes remaining when Fair headed over from a free-kick, but 5 minutes later a goalkeeping error and some quick thinking combined to seal the points for Peacehaven.

A clumsy drop-kick by Mitchell went straight to Matt Lago near the centre-circle, and he fired the ball back along the ground, and past the stranded keeper, to make certain of the victory.

"It was a great effort from the lads today", said Shaun Saunders after the game. "With the heat, and playing yesterday, some players were running on "empty" for the last 20 minutes, and I couldn't have asked for any more effort than they gave"
