Peacehaven & T. Res.  2  Pagham Res.  3

Sat 16th April, 2011.      Reserve Section Premier.

  Match details below

The Reserves brave battle against relegation continued on Saturday with the visit of second placed Pagham. They had been unlucky not to have claimed at least a point on their recent visit to Nyetimber Lane, and were to be left with the same feeling here again today.

Both sides created chances early on with Andy Wyatt and Dan Symonds going close for the visitors and Freddie Barker producing a good save from Dan Cox in the Pagham goal.

Midway through the first half Peacehaven took the lead with in spectacular fashion. Freddie Barker received the ball 38 yards out and, spotting Cox off his line, drove the ball over the keeper to give the home side a welcome lead.

Sadly, it was a lead that was only to last 8 minutes. A Pagham corner came in from the left and Dan McDonnell seemed to have it covered on the near post. The ball somehow slipped from his grasp though and fell invitingly to the feet of Dan Symonds who calmly chipped the ball over a line of defenders to level the scores.

As we neared half-time Michael Page nearly forced an error from the visiting keeper. After chasing a through ball, Page closed in on the keeper and Cox's clearance cannoned off him but the rebound fell kindly for the visitors to keep the scores level at the break.

Peacehaven tried to up the tempo at the start of the second half and went close when Tom Tyler's cross found Jake Powell who's goal-bound shot was well saved by Cox at the foot of the post.

The near miss seemed to spur Pagham into action and they were soon creating chances. Substitute Kerry Hardwell was left holding his head in disbelief after taking the ball into the 6 yard box and his shot evaded everyone, and the goal, before going out for a goal-kick.

Having survived that scare, Peacehaven's luck was to run out just 4 minutes later. A corner was floated in from the right and Hardwell rose unchallenged at the back post to nod home his side's second goal.

Three minutes later, with Peacehaven still trying to regroup, Pagham struck again. Nathan Park half-vollyed from outside the area to make Peacehaven's task even harder.

The home side were thrown a life-line 8 minutes from time when Tom Tyler's corner was powerfully headed home by Chris Barton, and suddenly there was some hope. The Pagham defence remained solid though, and were content to see out the remaining time.

Despite the disappointment of the afternoon, Peacehaven's fait is still in their own hands and a win at Mile Oak next week will assure safety if St Francis beat Hailsham.
