Ringmer  0  Peacehaven & Telscombe  1

Mon 25th April, 2011.    Sussex County League, Division 1.

  Match details below

Peacehaven will go into their last game of the season knowing that a win will surely secure them their target of a second place finish. In a tense and at times bad tempered match, which saw both sides reduced to ten men, Adam Kneller's penalty proved decisive.

After a long hot Bank Holiday weekend another match was probably the last thing either set of players wanted, and this wasn't a contest to linger in the memory. Peacehaven will be happy to take the points, after a second half which saw them at times camped inside their own half, but Ringmer will be frustrated that they were unable to make their possession count.

Peacehaven brought Tom Levitt back into the starting line up in place of Scott Marshall, one of a number of players carrying injuries as the season draws to a close. Meanwhile, Jake Buss was back in goal for Ringmer against his former side.

Ringmer, attacking down the slope in the first half, had the first opportunity when

Kieren Patel ghosted past Connor Saunders only to be denied by a good save from Wes Coleman.

At the other end Saunders was denied virtually on the line by a good stop from Buss and then furious appeals for a Peacehaven penalty were waved away following a clumsy challenge on Craig Bunch.

Then came the first flash point of the day. Clive Snell received a red card for abuse of the referee, and suddenly Peacehaven were in trouble. Ringmer had made a good start, and against ten men they must have felt a surprise was on the cards.

Peacehaven were now relying on hitting on the break, and against the run of play they took the lead. Craig Bunch broke clear of the home defence and crossed for Tom Levitt, who was impeded by Aaron Hasan. The referee, Andrew Colwell, seemed to take an age to decide what the punishment would be, but eventually reached again for his red card, and pointed to the spot. Adam Kneller struck the ball home to put Peacehaven ahead.

Craig Hall was perhaps a touch fortunate to escape further censure after a flare up with Joe Dryer, in a match where the temperature was rising fast as half time approached.

The pattern of the match was established from the start of the second half, with Peacehaven happy to allow Ringmer possession in areas of the pitch where they couldn't hurt them, and hoping to hit on the break. Much of the remainder of the game seemed to consist of Craig Bunch and Louis Brown chasing long clearances into the corners, which wasn't the greatest of spectacles.

Ringmer had plenty of the ball, but were facing an obdurate defence, and struggled to carve out any real openings. Indeed it was Peacehaven who had the better chances, with Aaron Gunn and James MacKenzie both failing to take advantage of good opportunities.

Ringmer eventually ran out of steam, and Peacehaven had eeked out the result they wanted.

Speaking after the game, Peter Edwards reflected, "It was a tough day for everyone, in lots of different ways, and it was a real test of character. We're now going into the last game with a great chance to clinch second place, which is a trubute to everyone involved, and nothing more than we deserve"
