Page. Sean Caffrey returned to
the bench after recovering from his long-term
injury. In glorious
sunshine, along with traditional Peacehaven
wind, neither side was able to take control of
the opening stages. Runs from Laurence Robinson
tested the home back-line, whilst Matt Lago had
a chance to open the scoring at the other end.
As Hassocks began to push
forward more, they broke the deadlock midway
through the half. A long throw caused confusion
in the home box, and after an Ashley Slaughter
header hit the post, Jamie Hillwood was on hand
to fire in a simple goal.
Peacehaven's best effort of
the first half was a long range effort from Jon
Miller which narrowly cleared the bar, and
Hassocks went close to doubling their lead as
half-time approached. A through ball found
Ashley Slaughter in the box and, with appeals
for handball being ignored, his close range shot
was well saved by Simon Parsons in the home
goal.
Peacehaven started the 2nd
half in positive fashion, but soon their task
was made even harder as Hassocks doubled their
lead. A through ball split the home defence, and
they where left standing as substitute James
Laing drove the ball past Parsons.
A tactical substitution soon
after seemed to bring the home sides play to
life. Sean Caffrey came on as left back,
allowing Tom Tyler to push into midfield and
soon Peacehaven were back in the game. A Matt
Nuttman free-kick found Matt Lago who, after
reaching the goal line, weaved his way across
the area before pulling the ball back to Jack
Loraine who fired past Jason Gander to restore
Peacehaven's hopes.
With time running out,
Peacehaven began to push forward at every
opportunity looking for the elusive equaliser,
and where rewarded 8 minutes from time. Matt
Nuttman was played in by Jack Loraine, and his
shot struck a defender on the hand. The
referee's whistle was followed by a long pause
before he decided the incident was in the area,
and Peacehaven had found a way back.
Matt Nuttman calmly stepped up
and fired home from the spot to level the
scores.
There was one more scare for
Peacehaven to encounter as injury time
approached as Hassocks beat the offside trap and
Simon Parsons had to produce a last-ditch save
to keep the scores level. The final whistle soon
after meant, against all odds, the great escape
had been accomplished, which is a marvellous
achievement for everyone involved.
A relieved Michael Page said
after the game, "Even when we went 2 down, I
knew everyone would dig deep to try and turn it
round. It was a great team effort"....... and
that statement just about sums up the Reserves
season !! |
