Peacehaven & T.  6  Rottingdean Village  0

Saturday 6th August, 2011.    Pre-Season Friendly.

A week from the start of the season, Peacehaven hit their stride with a comprehensive victory. After a patchy pre-season campaign this victory will have restored some much needed confidence to the squad, and sets them up perfectly for next weeks big kick off against Lingfield.

The performance was far better than the previous week against Worthing, and whilst one must bear in mind the relative strength of the opposition, it was a clear step forward for Pete Edwards' side.

Some of the football, especially in the second half, was excellent, and if that standard can be maintained, then hopes will be high for the campaign ahead.

Without being disrespectful, Rottingdean are the weakest opposition to have been faced, and that can give a false perspective. The Tye probably played as well against Whitehawk and lost, but wins breed confidence, and that was clear after this game.

Most of the front line players were back, with only Wes Millis and Jake Buss unavailable. Ryan Bradley and Ashley Rees started up front together, and from the start they were causing the Rottingdean defence severe discomfort.

Peacehaven were their own worst enemies at times in the first half, seemingly trying to walk the ball into the net. Ashley Rees, Ryan Bradley and Owen Callaghan all spurned chances, and the visitors began to make inroads at the other end. The breakthrough was finally made just before half time, as Bradley tucked home a penalty, awarded following a foul on Rees.

Peacehaven went up a gear in the second half, and at last the goals started to arrive. Craig Bunch headed in the second of the afternoon, meeting a well placed cross from Callaghan. A spectacular volley from Rees added to the lead, as Peacehaven became increasingly dominant against the tiring visitors. The introduction of Ben Bowra and Carl Dunk in midfield had seen the ball start to move forward faster, and the chances were coming thick and fast.

Rob O'Toole, last season's top scorer, struck for the first time this term drilling in from the right, and Bunch hit his second of the day with a first time strike. Ryan Bradley completed the scoring with a diving header to meet a perfectly placed cross from Tom Levitt.

Edwards will have been delighted to see all three of his front line forwards hit the net, and a first clean sheet of the season. He was also pleased with the cameo from Bowra, who may have played himself into contention for a spot in what is a rather congested central midfield. He now has the task of pinpointing his starting eleven for next Saturday.

Peacehaven:-  Heyburn, Hall, S Bowra (Kneller), Saunders (Gunn), Hill (Wilkinson), O'Toole (Snell), Altendorff (B Bowra), Marshall (Dunk), Callaghan (Levitt), Rees, Bradley (Bunch)
