Westfield went close to levelling
midway through the half when Robbie Anderson's
cross found Neil Rossiter in the area, but his
goal-bound effort hit the post and somehow rebounded
into the grateful arms of Jake Buss.
Having survived the scare,
Peacehaven doubled their lead on the half hour
when Wes Millis guided a through ball into the
path of Ryan Bradley and his shot crashed in off
the underside of the bar. A comfortable 2-0 lead
away from home, exactly the same as at Lancing
on Tuesday...... surely it couldn't happen again
??
A crazy 10 minutes leading up
to half time then made everyone who'd made the
journey from Sussex feel that the ghost of
Culver Road had come back to haunt them.
First Damien Panter was bought
down in the box by Wes Millis and Simon Sheppard
made no mistake from the spot. Five minutes from
the break Rossiter's pass found Panter unmarked
in the box and he drilled home the equalizer and
then, with the referee preparing to blow for the
break, Panter's pace took him into the box and
his low shot found its way into the bottom
corner.
Peacehaven, understandably,
looked shell-shocked as they left the field for
half-time, and things nearly got worse shortly
after the restart when Anderson's dipping drive
grazed the bar. Westfield were being given too
much space to run into when they attacked, but
Peacehaven started to combat this and it was
soon them who took the upper hand.
They went close to levelling
when Ben Bowra's perfect cross found Ryan
Bradley on the edge of the 6 yard box, but his
instant shot was well saved at close range by
Brawley. However, with 20 minutes remaining, the
cloud which had hung over the middle part of the
game for Peacehaven suddenly lifted. Brawley had
again done well to keep out two Peacehaven
efforts, but Wes Millis drove home the loose
ball to revive the game.
By now the home side were
beginning to run out of steam, and within 5
minutes 'Haven were back in front when Ashley
Rees' calculated chip floated over everyone
before dropping into the net. This really was an
end-to-end Cup Tie though, and you sensed there
was more to come.
Westfield threw men forward
for the last 10 minutes searching for the
equaliser, and Peacehaven where happy to wait
and hit them on break. In the final minute,
Clive Snell's corner was met by Ryan Bradley,
and he set up Wes Millis who put the game beyond
question.
The sun was certainly shining
again for Peacehaven now, and with Brawley
bringing down Ashley Rees in the final seconds
of injury time, Ryan Bradley made no mistake
from the spot to take them through to a
mouth-watering tie at Sittingbourne in 2 weeks.
The weatherman may have been
correct with his forecast, but nobody could have
predicted this scoreline - which is Peacehaven's
highest away victory in an FA Competition. On leaving the ground Pete Edwards
commented, "I wasn't particularly happy with the
performance - but I'm delighted with the
result." |
