Midway through the half, Scott
Marshall did well to win the ball outside the
box and lined up Carl Dunk who thundered the
ball towards goal. Binfield did well to
save, but Owen Callaghan was on hand to fire
home the loose ball for his 3rd goal in as many
games. It wasn't long
before Pagham where back in the game though - on
the half hour mark Scott Murfin's through ball
found Michael Frangou just outside the box, and he
fired past Buss to reduce the deficit.
Two minutes later, an
impressive long range effort from Carl Dunk was
well saved by Binfield and Craig Bunch was
unlucky to see his shot deflected wide just on
half-time. This really was a "Cup-Tie" though,
and you could sense there was a lot more action
to come in the second half.
Jake Buss did well to keep out
a Matt Wood effort soon after the restart,
whilst at the other end Scott Marshall's low
drive took a last second deflection to keep it
out. Having been in front for most of the
opening hour, Peacehaven's lead was finally
surrendered when Ross Wolfe's cross found
Michael Frangou at the back post, and he fired
home his second to level the scores.
With Peacehaven still reeling
from the equaliser, Scott Murfin nearly further
punished them twice in the next 2 minutes. First
he saw a shot cleared off the line, then he
broke free only to see his shot squeeze past the
post. With 20 minutes remaining, substitute Phil
Turner nearly put the visitors ahead with his
first touch, but Buss produced a great save in a
"1-on-1" situtation.
Back up the other end, and it
was Peacehaven who were soon to be cursing their
luck. Scott Marshall went on a great run through
the middle before Craig Bunch's effort rattled
back off the post, and then Binfield misjudged a
cross but Ryan Bradley's close range shot was
deflected away for a corner. With time running
out, Peacehaven thought they'd won the game when
spectacular long range effort from Rob O'Toole
dipped over Binfield, but the ball hammered
against the crossbar and back into play.
It looked like we were heading
for extra-time, but the last 5 minutes of the
game belonged to Pagham, and they made it pay.
With just 2 minutes remaining, Scott Murfin
picked the ball up on the edge of the box, and
ran across the area before firing low into the
bottom corner and, with the last action of the
game, a long through ball fell kindly for
substitute Ryan Champion who rounded Buss to
complete the scoring.
The result sounds more severe
than it actually was - it was a true Cup-Tie
which could have gone either way, but it's
Pagham who now go on to face either Ringmer or
Rye United in the 3rd Round. |
