O & G United  2  Peacehaven & T. Res.  0

Sat 15th October, 2011.     Wentworth Cup, 2nd Round

  Match details below

The Reserves made an unexpected exit from the Vernon Wentworth Cup on Saturday, following a below par performance against O & G United from the Brighton League.

Peacehaven where clearly favourites going into this game, but despite a lot of possession, and chances, where unable to overcome their lower League rivals.

There were six changes to the side which had beaten Yapton in the Intermediate Cup the previous week, but O & G took the lead early on in the game. A crossfield ball from Barton was intercepted by the home forward who drove home from 25 yards.

Peacehaven where unlucky not to equalise midway through the first half when Aaron Birch rose to meet a Jake Powell corner, but his header crashed against the bar. Chris Hoad headed back the rebound, but the home keeper somehow managed to keep the ball in play, despite Peacehaven claims that it had crossed the line.

As half-time approached, Peacehaven had a glorious chance to level when Hoad's cross found Luke Hamon in front of goal, but his close range header somehow ended up going over the bar.

The same player had another chance to level on the hour, finding himself in a 1-on-1 situation with the keeper, but was unable to finish, and soon after the home side doubled their lead with only their second clear chance of the afternoon. They caught 'Haven on the break, from deep inside their own half, and their left winger made a long run with the ball before firing home from an angle.

O & G now go no to face either Lancing United or C.C.K. in the 3rd Round, whilst Peacehaven return to League action at Hailsham Town on Friday evening.
