Match details below
They say that lightening
doesn't strike twice, but that's certainly not
true, and if you needed any evidence of that,
all you had to do was to go The Beaconsfield on
Friday evening.
When these two sides met at
Piddinghoe Avenue for the opening game of the
season back in August, Hailsham snatched the
points with a 3-2 win in injury time, and
exactly the same was to happen here again.
No one could have guessed what
lay ahead as Peacehaven made the perfect start,
taking the lead in the 8th minute. Rob Kupetis
was set free down the right, and his through
ball found Matt Lago just inside the area and
his powerful drive opened the scoring.
Before Hailsham had time to find
any rhythm to their play Peacehaven had doubled
their lead. Tom Stutters cross was fumbled by
the home keeper, and Rob Kupetis was on hand to
head his 7th of the season.
Hailsham's first Team were
without a game the following day, and it was to
be two of their recognised front-side players
who were to go on to turn this match. |

Midway through the first half
they pulled a goal back when a ball across the
Peacehaven area was fired into the corner by
Stuart Lewis, and Hailsham where back in the
game. The home side
where starting to dictate the game, and seven
minutes later a through ball found Shane
Saunders and he fired past Simon Parsons to
level the scores.
The second half was a scrappy
affair, with with chances few and far between
for either side. As we headed into injury time,
so came the first controversial decision of what
was to be a nightmare end to the game for
Peacehaven. Steffen Robinson-Webster managed to
beat the offside trap and, bearing down on the
penalty area was up-ended by the on rushing
keeper. As Peacehaven prepared to take the
free-kick they waited to see what colour card
the keeper would receive, but where amazed to
see he wasn't even spoken to.
The free-kick came to nothing,
but even so it seemed that 'haven would be
claiming a valuable point against a strong
Hailsham line-up. Not so - in the 7th minute of
injury time a ball through the Peacehaven
defence was flagged offside and everyone,
including the forwards, paused expecting a
whistle - which never came. Shane Saunders, not
believing his luck, then continued his run and
slotted past the bemused Parsons to snatch
victory. Peacehaven's protests, and the linesman
who still had his flag raised, where ignored by
Mr Miles, and it meant a 4th last minute defeat
of the season.
On reflection, a draw was
probably a fair result - and no one could ever
have catered for such a finish to a game !! |
