Peacehaven & T.  3  Raynes Park Vale  1

Sat 22nd Oct, 2011.       F.A. Vase, 1st Round

  Match Details Below

Peacehaven progressed into the Second Round of the FA Vase in a match where Ashley Rees underlined his importance to the club. Short on form and confidence since his abortive move to Crawley Down, the striker chose the perfect moment to get back to his best. His two second half goals proved decisive in a tense encounter against stubborn opposition.

Raynes Park Vale had put paid to Newhaven's hopes in the previous round and appeared to be on course for an unusual double before they were seen off by a spirited comeback.

With Craig Bunch still ruled out through injury and the likes of Kane Louis, Ryan Bradley, Liam O'Brien and Dan Smith competing for a starting place these days, it was an opportune moment for the forward to regain his scoring touch.

Peacehaven had gone into the match with half their squad cup tied and were without all their recent signings. Rob O'Toole and Scott Marshall came back into the starting line up and they made an explosive start. They could have been two

up inside the first five minutes as Rob O'Toole headed over from Carl Dunk's cross and then Ryan Bradley hit the bar with a header.

After that initial flurry Peacehaven rather lost their way as the half wore on. A tendency to over elaborate in possession continually let in the visitors who grew increasingly confidence. They should have gone in ahead, but Dave Molsey was denied by a fine save from Jake Buss.

The pattern continued after half time and it wasn't long before Raynes Park took the lead. A long throw found the head of Peter Hickford who found the net. It was yet another goal conceded to a free header, and Peacehaven cannot continue to concede such soft goals if they want to win anything.

The introduction of Matt Nuttman, who had played ninety minutes for the Reserves the previous evening, made the difference for Peacehaven. That allowed Dunk to move into central midfield, and at last Peacehaven started to get a grip of the ball in the middle of the park.

The equaliser arrived when Dunk's free kick was spilled at the feet of Wes Millis, who scrambled it over the line.

The first real moment of quality in an untidy match saw 'haven take the lead. Tom Levitt's superbly disguised pass fed Ashley Rees, who rounded Dean Clipit and stroked his shot home. When Rees then steered in his second from Bradley's cut back the match was as good as over, and Peacehaven were through to the next round
