Mile Oak  1  Peacehaven & T.  2

Wed 26th Oct, 2011.   Sussex Senior Cup, 2nd Round.

  Match details below

Apart from two big wins in their first visits to Mile Oak, this fixture has always proved to be a tough obstacle for Peacehaven, and last night's Senior Cup tie was no different.

Shaun Saunders decided to shuffle the pack for this game, giving full debuts to Harry Coker and new signing Matt Fleming, with Tom Levitt and Josh Heyburn making their first starts since the Crowborough game.

The main event of a low key first half was Josh Heyburn colliding with the post and breaking his nose, and shortly after Peacehaven had used 2 substitutes as Tom Levitt had to be replaced Scott Marshall.

On the stroke of half time Peacehaven created their best chances when first Ryan Bradley's low drive produced a good save from Will Packham, and then Rob O'Toole saw his header narrowly dip over the bar.

With the last attack of the half, Mile Oak nearly broke the deadlock when Lloyd Skinner headed wide from close range.

After the break, Peacehaven (with the wind and rain behind their backs) where soon in front when Scott Marshall's run down the right wing culminated in a searching cross to the back post for Ryan Bradley to score his 9th of the season.

As the rain started to ease, so Mile Oak started to edge their way back into the game, and on the hour the scores where level. Liam Austin-Slade won possession in the 'haven area, and his angled shot curled around Jake Buss and into the corner.

As the second half wore on, so fitness was becoming a key factor, and Peacehaven created a succession of chances which tested the home defence. In the space of 10 minutes, Will Packham produced three top class saves from Ryan Bradley and Ashley Rees, and you started to think that it would take a mistake, or something spectacular, to decide this tie.

When it came, the deciding goal was neither, but the relief from the away contingent could be felt around the ground. With 8 minutes remaining, Scott Marshall won the ball outside the box and his low drive evaded Packham and went in off the inside of the post to send Peacehaven into the 3rd Round.

After the game a smiling Shaun Saunders said he was happy with the evening. "It's a testing place to come to and get a win. It was a scruffy game and I'm more happy with the result than the performance. Let's hope we get a decent home draw in the next round".
