Littlehampton Town  0  Peacehaven & T.  2

Sat 29th Oct, 2011. John O'Hara League Cup 3rd Round.

  Match details below

Twenty years ago, this fixture would have received "top billing" in the County, as both Clubs where sweeping all before them at the time, and where involved in a classic tussle for the title which went to the last game.

There's been a lot of water under the bridge since then and whilst Peacehaven have their sights set on Ryman League football, Littlehampton are trying to put a promotion push together to elevate them back into Division 1.

They may be playing at different levels now, and with different aspirations, but Saturday's Cup tie still managed to serve up a tough encounter, reminiscant of yesteryear.

It was a second meeting against Division 2 opposition for Peacehaven in 3 days, and there were four changes to the side which had beaten Mile Oak on Wednesday. Jake Buss was back in goal in place of the injured Josh Heyburn, whilst Dave Altendorff, Adam Kneller and Scott Marshall all returned to the starting eleven.

The match started at a frantic pace, and Peacehaven soon found themselves a

goal ahead in unusual circumstances. Adam Kneller's well placed through ball split the home defence but was incepted by Adam Goff. With Rob O'Toole in close attendance he seemed to panic and duly rifled the ball past his own keeper and into the bottom corner for a well taken opening goal !

Littlehampton now had a mountain to climb, but as the pace settled, so they came more into the game. Alex Kew and Jamie Wrigley where keeping the away defenders busy with their quick runs, but as we neared half time Peacehaven began to create more chances.

Bizarrely, with a brass band practicing on the adjoining cricket field, it didn't help that the attacks where accompanied with the Thunderbirds theme music, and Peacehaven had to settle for a one goal lead at the break.

Ten minutes into he second half Littlehampton had what was to prove to be their golden chance to alter the outcome of this fixture. Danny Hand found himself clear of the defence but, with only Jake Buss in front of him, chipped the ball harmlessly to the grateful keeper.

A hard working Littlehampton side where continuing to try and turn the game around, but Peacehaven were always poised, waiting to exploit the gaps they were creating. Ashley Rees produced a fine save from Jon Hendrick, and a fluent move around the area ended with Carl Dunk's shot skimming the bar.

With 15 minutes remaining the goal which Peacehaven had been threatening to score eventually arrived. Rob O'Toole controlled the ball outside the box, and placed his low shot past Hendrick and firmly into the bottom corner.

Littlehampton still battled on, but there was no way back for them, and Peacehaven now go on to face either Crowborough Athletic or Rye United, at home, in the Quarter-Finals.

"That was a great performance" said Shaun Saunders as he left the field, "We knew this was going to be a tough game, but everyone knew their job and everyone gave 100% today - I'm really pleased"

Representatives    Congratulations to Wes Millis and Ashley Rees who have both been called up to the Sussex squad to face The AFA at Dulwich Hamlet on Wednesday evening.
