Match details below
If
ever a side needed to win a game - this was it.
The previous month had seen the Reserves exit
from both their remaining Cup Competitions, and
with no points from three League games, they
were now in danger of getting left behind at the
foot of the table.
However, with a new mood of
optimism, and players returning from injury and
unavailability, they produced an impressive
performance on Friday evening which, it is
hoped, will be the turning point of their
season.
Josh Heyburn, Chris Barton and
Michael Page all retruned from injury, Harrsion
Cullinane made his first start for 6 weeks, and
the squad was bolstered by the inclusion of
Chamal Fenelon as he was Cup-tied for the 1st
Team game the following day.
There was little to chose between
the two sides in the opening stages of the game,
but Peacehaven took the lead midway through the
first half in eye-catching fashion. Chamal
Fenelon won the ball near the centre-circle and,
after shaking off two challenges, fired the ball
hard and low into the bottom corner from
distance. |

The lead was soon doubled when a
poor clearance led to Robertas Kupetis finding
himself clear with only Mark Spicer, the
stranded keeper, in front of him. He held his
composure and unselfishly played in Steffen
Robinson-Webster who had the simplest of tasks
of walking the ball into an unguarded net.
James Coulston produced a good
save from Heyburn in Rye's only real attack of
the half, and Peacehaven were looking
comfortable at the break, and things got even
better immediately after the restart.
With their first attack, a
through ball from Tom Stutters caused confusion
in the away defence and Robinson-Webster was on
hand to fire the ball home over Spicer to give
Rye a mountain to climb.
Peacehaven changed their
shape, and Rye started to enjoy a lot of
possession, but it was in areas where they could
do little damage, and Peacehaven where happy to
deal with the pressure. Rye's best chance fell
to Moussa Coate, but his effort flew wide of the
target, and Heyburn's handling of some dangerous
crosses was faultless.
The longer the game went on,
the more frustrated Rye became, and tempers soon
became frayed. Rye's Manager was sent from the
dug-out, there were some heated exchanges and,
after a flurry of bookings, the scoring was
completed 5 minutes from time when Fenelon's low
free-kick rifled into the corner of the net
leaving Spicer with no chance.
Robertas Kupetis went
agonisingly close to making it 5-0 in the dying
moments, and this much needed victory lifts them
away fro the foot of the table, and in good
spirits as they travel to East Preston on
Saturday, looking to continue their revival. |
