keeper on the ground. Mr Erguven
waved away the protests, and Pagham had their
noses in front. Scott
Murfin then went close to extending the lead but
Peacehaven came back into the game for the last
10 minutes of the first half, and by the break
they were level. Craig Hall's perfect cross
found Rob O'Toole near the penalty spot, and his
angled header flew into the top corner.
Peacehaven almost took the
lead with their first attack of the second half.
Carl Dunk drilled the ball in low across the box
and it was deflected on to the post, and soon
after Wes Hallett in the home goal made a great
save from Dunk's thunderous shot....... and then
the lights went out !! (or some of them)
Each of the pylons around the
ground suddenly only had 1 or 2 lights working
and, with darkness falling, it was obvious
something would have to be done in order to
complete the fixture. However, the referee
decided to carry on, and within 2 minutes Pagham
where back in front when Scott Murfin's header
found it's way to Temple, and he fired home his
second of the game.
There was then a 30 minute
break whilst the floodlights were mended, and
Pagham then enjoyed a 10 minute spell of
dominace in which you felt a goal was sure to
come. Buss produced a series of saves from
Murfin and Temple before 'Haven started to
settle, and soon the action was at the other end
of the pitch.
Hallett had to be at his best
to keep out a Rob O'Toole effort but, with 25
minutes remaining, the pendulum swung in
Peacehaven's favour when Pagham defender Joe
Booker received a 2nd yellow card and they were
down to 10 men.
Peacehaven pushed forward,
looking to exploit their advantage, but where
nearly caught out when Pagham hit them on the
break. Phil Turner broke free and rounded Buss
but fired over when it must surely have been
easier to score. There was another scare soon
after when a James Temple shot hit the post, but
Peacehaven had ridden their luck, and the game
was still very much alive.
The pace was still relentless,
and Peacehaven laid seige to the home goal for
the final 10 minutes. Ryan Bradley saw a header
scrape over the bar, there were three goalmouth
scrambles which ended in favour of the home
side, and you felt that this just wasn't going
to be Peacehaven's day. With two minutes
remaining, that all changed when the ball fell
to Carl Dunk outside the box and his powerful
shot flew into the corner, leaving Hallett
rooted to the spot.
It was "Advantage Peacehaven"
now, but there was still time for one more
attack which saw Dunk's goalbound free-kick
brilliantly saved by Hallett, and so we went to
extra-time.
Pagham's counter-attacks
always posed a threat, with Murfin always
looking dangerous, but the 'Haven defence held
firm against the break-aways as they pushed
forward looking for the killer goal. In the
final minute of the 1st Peroid Ashley Rees
thought he''d scored it after Bradley's ball set
him free and his shot flew past Hallett, only to
see a late flag end his celebrations.
The final 15 minutes of
extra-time belonged to Peacehaven - and they
made it pay. Shortly after the sides had turned
around Ryan Bradley had a goal ruled out for
offside, but then the long awaited goal finally
arrived. A goalmouth scramble ended in the ball
rolling loose outside the box, and Adam Kneller
struck through a crowd of players, and past
Hallett, to give Peacehaven the lead for the
first time. They were now rampant, and a great
run by Ashley Rees ended with him setting up Rob
O'Toole who's shot scraped past the post, but it
wasn't long before the confirmation that
Peacehaven had won this classic encounter
finally arrived. Carl Dunk ran onto a ball
outside the area, and his rasping shot cannoned
in off the underside of the bar to spark wild
celebrations from the Peacehaven players and
supporters.
Speaking from his armchair on
Sunday, Shaun Saunders was full of praise for
his side saying, "I'm really proud of everyone
for the way they performed, and they can feel
proud of themselves too. That was a real battle,
and the odds where against us for a lot of the
game, but they refused to give up and in the end
fully deserved the victory" |
