Eastbourne Town Res  3  Peacehaven Res  2

Sat 17th December, 2011.     Reserve Section (Premier)

  Match details below

A spirited performance nearly saw the Reserves fight back against the odds at The Saffrons on Saturday, as 10 men almost came back from the dead against the League leaders.

There where 9 changes to the side which had started against Lancing the previous week, with only Chris Barton and Billy Pout retaining their place. New signing Sam Terry started up front, with Simon Parsons returning in goal and Michael Page making his first start for 2 months.

With Eastbourne Town leading the table, this was always going to be a tough game to gain any points from, and this was emphasised after 10 minutes when they took an early lead after a low cross from the right was touched in at the post.

Things got worse midway through the half when a controversial penalty was awarded after Aaron Birch was deemed to have committed a foul from a Town corner. The kick was converted, to leave Peacehaven with a huge task on their hands.

Michael Page saw an effort hit the post as half time approached, but 5 minutes

after the break things got worse for Haven. Sean Caffrey picked up a second booking, reducing them to 10 men, and within minutes Town where 3 in front when a curling shot beat Parsons.

Surely there was no way back from that?... Just after the hour Peacehaven where thrown a lifeline when Aaron Birch's free kick from 35 yards cannoned in off the underside of the bar, and 7 minutes later the deficit was reduced even further.

Chris Barton's looping though ball found Billy Pout in the area, and he was hauled down as he attempted to round the keeper, leaving Mr Storrie to award the second penalty of the afternoon. Aaron Birch kept his nerve, and sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot, and a very unlikely come-back was suddenly on the cards.

It was a nervous last 15 minutes for the home side as they defended their lead, relying on counter-attacks. Billy Pout went closest to finding the equaliser when he headed just over from a teasing cross, but Town held on and Peacehaven slipped to their 4th 2-3 defeat of the season.

However, it was a courageous fight-back against a strong side, and Peacehaven will be looking to build on that spirit as they continue their quest to pull away from the foot of the table in the new year.
